How To Change A Dogs Microchip

Redcar WesleyHere at White Cross Vets, you know we're passionate about your pet's health and their safety. We are great believers that microchipping your cat or dog is one of the most important things you can do as a responsible pet owner. Of course nobody wants to think of their beloved pet getting lost, but it does happen, and when the pet is microchipped, there's a much better chance of a sad story having a happy ending.

By April next year, it will actually be a legal requirement to have your dog microchipped, so if you haven't gotten round to it yet, there's never been a better time. Having your pet microchipped is a quick, simple procedure and the long term peace of mind outweighs the onetime cost massively. Plus of course for pets who are members of our Complete Wellness Plan, there is no cost as free microchipping is one of the services included in the plan.

Without doubt, microchipping your pet is important, but what is equally important, is keeping the information attached to your pet's microchip up to date. 'How do I change my dog's microchipping details' is a question we hear often, and the good news is it's very simple.

There are a number of reasons you might need to change details on your dog's microchip – obviously if you move house or change your telephone number, you'll want to update the details accordingly so that if it's ever needed, you'll be contactable as soon as possible. Changing microchip details in relation to your contact information can be done online at Petlog, the company who maintain the microchip database for most of the registered pets in the UK. You will need your pet's microchip number before you can request any changes – if you don't have it, don't panic, we will happily scan your pet for free at any of our vet clinics and give you the necessary number.

Such changes are administered by the same company, but in the interests of security, change of ownership requests cannot be completed online, you will need to complete a form and send it by post instead.

Is your pet microchipped? Are you certain that the contact details are up to date? It doesn't hurt to check and it's quick and easy to do. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask your local White Cross Vet who will be happy to scan your pet and give you all the information you need to make sure all your details are current.

If you're yet to have your dog microchipped, please do call your local practice to make an appointment – it's a simple and quick procedure that could save a lot of heartache down the line, so it makes good sense to take care of it now ahead of the change in legislation.

If you have any more questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to ask your vet – we're always happy to help!
